Frequently Asked Questions

Water University certification

Question:  Is there an on-line test-prep course?

Not at this time. Water University provides a study guide which serves as an excellent reference document. Several State Associations are also offering "full-service" certification programs that include detailed test preparation. Contact your state association for more information.

Question:  Can I still take the exam if I am not working in a system currently?

Yes, the Utility Management Certification is designed to recognize experience and achievements.  As long as you qualify and meet the 100 points required on the application you may take the exam and receive the certification.

Question:  Do I have to purchase a study guide?

No, but it is a good investment to enhance your changes of passing the exam. Purchase of the study guide is highly recommended.

Question:  Are college credits available?

The Utility Management Certification is an industry program and not associated with college curriculum.

Question:  Is there training classes put on in my State?

Contact your State Rural Water Association to determine if one is scheduled.

Question:  If I fail the exam do I have to pay the full amount to take it over?

Hopefully you will be successful the first time you take the exam. If not you will be notified of how to re-take the exam.

Question:  How long is the certification good for?

The UMC is a three year certification and is renewable with 40 hours of training during the three year period.

Question:  When will I know if I passed the exam?

Once you complete the exam, the score is immediately provided in real time.

Question:  What happens after I pass the exam?

You will be sent a confirmation from Water University and a plaque will be ordered and sent to your State Association for presentation.

Question:  My state is listed as a Satellite of Water University, what does that mean?

As an affiliate of Water University, the State Association is authorized to provide training based on the UMC Study Guide.

Question:  My state is not listed, can I still participate?

Yes, you may apply directly to Water University and your certification will be handled directly.

Question:  Do I have to be a member of my State Rural Water Association to qualify for this program?

No, but membership is strongly encouraged. Member utilities enjoy the benefits, services and programs that are offered by their State Associations. The UMC Certification is just an example of the services your association is offering to the industry and profession.

Yes, you are encouraged to proudly show your accomplishment, achievement and leadership in the water and wastewater industry.

Question:  Is this a National Certification?

Yes, this designation will be recognized nationally and within each state.

Question:  If I have comments, constructive ideas and thoughts on the program, process and certification once I'm awarded the Certification can I provide them?

Yes, by all means if we can improve the process and program we want to do that.  You can contact us by e-mailing wateruniversity@nrwa.org

Question:  Can I receive CEUs for my Operators license by taking this exam?

Each state licensing agency makes that determination. Contact your State Rural Water association or the certification authority.
